Fatima al-Fihri, a 9th-century Muslim woman, founded Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, in 859 CE. Originally a mosque, it grew into the world’s first degree-granting university, shaping Islamic and Western scholarship.
At a time when women’s contributions were often overlooked, Fatima created a space where scholars studied theology, mathematics, medicine, and astronomy. Al-Qarawiyyin influenced the Renaissance and produced great minds like Ibn Khaldun and Maimonides.
Her legacy proves that education is a right for all. Fatima al-Fihri’s vision continues to inspire, showing how one woman’s dedication to knowledge can change the world.
