Maryam Al-Ijliya was a 10th-century Muslim woman who became a master engineer during the Islamic Golden Age. Living in Aleppo, she trained under expert astrolabe makers and quickly gained recognition for her exceptional craftsmanship. At a time when scientific and technological advancements were flourishing in the Muslim world, Maryam carved a space for herself in a field dominated by men. Her dedication and skill led her to work under the patronage of Sayf al-Dawla, the ruler of Aleppo, where she refined the intricate designs of astrolabes, tools that were essential for astronomy, navigation, and Islamic rituals. Astrolabes were one of the most advanced scientific instruments of their time, used for calculating time, determining prayer times, and locating the Qibla direction. They played a crucial role in navigation, helping travelers and scholars study the stars and planetary movements. Maryam not only learned the complex mechanics of astrolabe construction but also improved their accuracy and design. Her refined models became widely sought after, showcasing both precision and artistry. Through her expertise, she contributed to the growing field of Islamic astronomy, making celestial calculations more accessible and practical for scholars and explorers alike. Maryam's dedication to her craft serves as a perfect example of the Quranic principle: "Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?'" (Surah Az-Zumar 39:9).Her story reminds us that seeking knowledge is only the first step; true wisdom lies in applying that knowledge to benefit society.

Maryam didn't just study astrolabes, she actively refined and innovated their design, ensuring that her expertise had a lasting impact. Her ability to turn learning into action made her one of the most influential figures in her field.
